Product Review: Flotation Cell
Brief Product Description A Flotation Cell is the core component of the flotation process for mineral separation. This device utilizes the surface properties of mineral particles, with the aid of chemical reagents (collectors, frothers, depressants), to separate valuable minerals from gangue (waste rock). This process is widely used in the mining industry for concentrating metallic sulfides (copper, lead, zinc, nickel, gold), oxide minerals, and even in non-mining industries like chemical processing and recycling.
Structural Features flotation cell
- Tank/Cell Body: The main vessel where the flotation process takes place; typically made of steel with a corrosion-resistant coating.
- Aeration and Agitation System (Impeller & Diffuser/Aerator System): Includes an impeller that stirs the material and draws air into the slurry, and a diffuser or aerator that disperses air into fine bubbles.
- Compressed Air System: Supplies the necessary air for creating flotation bubbles, provided by a blower or compressor.
- Froth Collection System (Scraper/Frother Removal System): A mechanism for collecting the froth containing valuable minerals from the surface of the cell.
- Slurry Level Control System: For adjusting the slurry level within the cell.
- Reagent Feed System: Points for precise addition of chemical reagents to the slurry.
Mechanism of Operation Slurry (a mixture of finely ground ore and water), along with flotation reagents (collector, frother, depressant), is fed into the flotation cell. The impeller rotates at high speed, creating turbulence in the slurry and drawing air through the aeration system, dispersing it into fine bubbles. Collectors attach to the surface of valuable mineral particles, making them hydrophobic. These hydrophobic particles then adhere to the air bubbles and float to the surface of the slurry, forming a mineral-rich froth layer. Frothers help stabilize this froth, while depressants prevent the flotation of gangue particles. By removing the froth from the cell surface, a concentrate enriched with the valuable mineral is obtained.
